Johanna received her PhD in Industrial Relations and Human Resource Management from the Centre for Industrial Relations and Human Resource Management at the University of Toronto in 2007. She joined Saint Mary's University in January, 2008. Johanna's thesis is entitled "Studies of Learning and Work: Job Control, Participation in Learning and Underemployment" and mixes qualitative and quantitative research to explore how workers job control can increase learning participation and knowledge application on the job. A specific focus was placed on information technology workers.

Johanna has several other research interests within the field of industrial relations.
